Back Pain Center

Back pain of all kinds is extremely common. Unfortunately, many people surrender to the misbelief that they have to live the rest of their life with back pain. Many people resort to popping pain killers daily, or trying countless gimmicks that yield little to no results, yet costing them hundreds or thousands of dollars. Back pain can come from many different sources and identifying that source is the first step toward customizing the correct care for you and your family.

A very common type of self treatment that many people use for back pain is to apply a heating pad. Applying heat for approximately 20 minutes sedates the nerves, causing pain to reduce. However, the heat also causes any inflammation present to be worse, bringing on more pain once the nerves are no longer sedated. Although heat application can be good for those patients with certain types of chronic pain (or pain that has been around for at least a few months), it is much better to apply ice. Ice, especially on a new injury, sedates the nerves, reduces inflammation, and has a lasting effect. Nerves are very sensitive to both heat and ice, so whenever using either of these treatments, be sure to remove the heat or ice within 20 minutes of application, and do not use it more than once per hour. Never fall asleep with either of these self-treatments, as you can cause prolonged nerve damage.

It is important to know and understand the cause of your pain so that you may treat it appropriately. Proper treatment is the key ingredient to alleviating back pain. But relieving the pain is just one of many steps. There is the rehabilitation process as well as lifestyle changes that must be made so that your quality of life can be taken back.
