Ankylosing Spondylitis

Also called AS, rheumatoid spodylitis, Marie Strumpell's disease, or poker spine, Ankylosing spondylitis is a progressively debilitating inflammatory disease in which the spine progressively fuses itself. Common in younger men who complain of chronic low back pain, it usually begins in the SI joint. Often, involvement of inflammatory bowel disease occurs along side and is a sign of progression of the disease.

The diagnosis is indicated by a lack of motion in the spine and is confirmed with xray analysis and blood testing helps confirm the diagnosis. Catching this ailment early is the best way to keep the spine from fusing. Motion and gentle manipulation of the spine keeps the spine in good health. Monitoring the extent of the disease is important and co-management with a rheumatologist is important.
