Disc Lesions

A very broad way to define an injury where the disc is the main culprit is called a disc lesion. The disc is a soft, hydrated, flexible piece of tissue between the bones in your back. It acts as support for impact in our spines so that we don't destroy our bones when doing something as simple as walking. When the disc is put under enough pressure, it can put pressure onto the nerve root which serves other areas of the lower extremity. For example, the disc between your 4th and 5th lumbar vertebra can impinge the nerve root, causing pain, weakness, or numbness in a predictable pattern down the side of the leg or at the large toe. These types of physical feeling are incredibly serious and if not addressed can easily evolve into situations that may require surgery. Not addressing these issues is costly and takes a massive toll on one's quality of life.
