Spondylolisthesis
Pronounced spon-di-lo-liss-thee-sis, and more commonly called a spondy, this is a very common forward malposition of the vertebra. To understand this condition better, it is good to understand what is effected by various degrees.Spondy's are categorized by a grading system, where grade 1 is up to 24% of anterior movement, grade 2 is 25-49% of anterior movement, grade 3 is 50-74% of anterior movement, grade 4 is 75-99%, and grade 5 is a full 100% of anterior movement of one vertebra over another. Let's discuss this in a bit of detail.
During grade 1, the movement of the vertebra can cause pain but is often asymptomatic and stable. However, as the vertebra creeps higher on the grade 1 level, the risk of progression increases. Grade 2 is also considered stable, but may have increased pain and risk for additional slippage. The problem with slippage is in the compression of the spinal cord that occurs behind the slipping body; a form of canal stenosis. At grade 3, there is major cause for concern and the potential for surgery will need to be considered.
At Green Chiropractic in San Francisco Dr. Jacob achieves a method of prevention of additional slippage of a spondy with focused exercises and responsible and appropriate adjusting. Additionally, monitoring the progression of this condition is highly important so as to avoid more severe future complications.
