Compression Fractures

Compression fractures are a quite common cause of low back pain, mid back pain, and even neck pain. They can occur as a result of trauma, i.e. a fall, or as a result of a pathology or disease. To differentiate, a thorough history of the patient is required, along with x-ray examination. With certain features of the x-ray and the history, a blood test might also be needed to help make a true diagnosis of what may be the cause.

A weak bone in an older patient (often the result of osteopenia or osteoporosis) can lead to a compression fracture with something as simple as a sneeze. In a younger patient, it would be less typical for simple trauma to cause a compression fracture. Short of adequate force to cause the fracture, the presence of a compression fracture is actually indicative of weakness in the bone and could signify the presence of disease, including cancers.

It is highly important to get examined after experiencing an injury, regardless of how minor you feel that the injury may have been.
